overconsumption of media is something i’m actively trying to work on and as i’ve gotten older it’s only gotten harder with all these new types of short-form content and algorithims being spread. I’m big on trying to balance my creation vs consumption ratio, and was inspired to write more mini essays bc of a youtuber odysseas (rec him)! love this topic!
yeah, I feel this a lot. it’s honestly so easy to get stuck in overconsumption now, especially with how everything is designed to keep you scrolling. writing more mini essays is such a good idea though, I love that! I’ll definitely check him out, thank you for the rec! and thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts, I really appreciate it 🫶
I noticed this when I was in grad school. Students would often recite information back in their essays without contributing—somewhat—original arguments/takes. Like you alluded to, mere comprehension is noticeably different than the ability to reflect and articulate ideas.
Good job articulating this point and suggesting practices to refine one’s skills.
yes, I’ve noticed this too and I’ve definitely caught myself doing the same. I think it also depends on the reason — if it’s just lack of interest in the topic, that’s understandable, but if it’s because we don’t really know how to work with information and just default to the easiest way, that’s where it becomes a problem. thank you for taking the time to read it and leave your thoughts, I really appreciate it!
This is something I use during studying, myself. It’s like active recall, to know how much of the topic you reproduce by pure understanding. That being said I really should be mindful of what I consume. Because if you asked me about an article I read a few days ago I don’t think I’ll be able to remember
I wish I knew this back in my university years. same for me — unless I’m actively reading (notes, annotations) I barely remember what I read the day before.
this is something I'm finally directly combatting (and I feel truly ready to). this part - "It doesn’t leave space for ambiguity, for tension, for open questions." is particularly important for me.

❤️❤️ i found this method on youtube after a 9 hour screen time so i wouldn’t be so proud of it, but i can definitely use yours in my daily life now
Your suggestion to write 5–10 full sentences is a perfect 'stress test' for the mind…it’s a beautiful way to force the fragments into a foundation.
This made me look at my own open tabs with a much more critical eye… 🥹
I’m so glad you liked it! yes, it’s such a nice way to give our thoughts and ideas some form
